Cheyney, PA - Cheyney University women's volleyball team saw the second win of the season with a 5 set match win over Bowie State University. Cheyney University (2-19, 0-13 PSAC) took the first set 25-13 with tough serving and controlled passing and then dropped the next two sets. With tough serving, the Lady Wolves rolled through sets 4 and 5 for the win. Senior
Virshae Campbell (Long Beach, CA, Silverado HS) reflected on the win by stating "I think that we played well. At times we lost control of the ball, but we stuck together as a team and came through in the most critical times." When asked about the game plan, Campbell commented "our game plan definitely worked to our advantage. I know, from experience that they are a very scrappy team and they pick up a lot of balls defensively. Our focus was to shut them down in the beginning in the match, so that they couldn't gain momentum. We failed to do that in sets 2 and 3. Then we refocused on our original objective and regained control ultimately resulting in a win."
Junior transfer
Chelsea Hutson (Phoenix, AZ, Apollo HS) paced Cheyney University offensively with 15 kills and junior
Akia Harris (Detroit, MI, Chandler Park Academy HS) anchored the defense with 26 digs.
Nishay Carrier (Harrisburg, PA, Harrisburg HS), also a junior handed out 31 assists in the match, while running a diversified offense. Coach
Joan Braid was very happy with the win and stated "Bowie is always a tough match for us. We always look forward to playing them each season. They are a well coached team and we look forward to the re-match next week."
Cheyney University will take on Bowie a week from today (10/27) at their home site in Bowie, MD.
Cheyney University next PSAC events will be versus East Stroudsburg University and Kutztown University at Cope Hall next Friday evening (10/30 at 7PM) and Saturday afternoon (10/31 at 1PM).
