Cheyney (1-15:1-12)snapped a 47 game losing streak with a 52-45 road victory at Mansfield (4-13:2-11). Lachelle Miller and Tamara Russell paced the Lady Wolves with 11 points apiece. Shayna Miller and Kyra Hines-Allen added 9 and 8 respectively. Christina Jordan led all players with 10 rebounds. It was the third time this season that Jordan recorded double digits in rebounding.
The last time Cheyney won a women’s basketball contest was back on February 5, 2011 over East Stroudsburg 74-66.
The Mountaineers were led by Katie Fitzpatrick’s 10 points.
Cheyney fell behind 5-0 but battled back to tie the game at 13 on a Destiny McFarlane jumper. Trailing 16-14 with four minutes to play in the half the Lady Wolves went on an 8-2 run to end the half and take a 22-18 into the locker room.
Mansfield would score the first five points of the second half but the Lady Wolves would immediately answer with an 11-0 run highlighted by six points by Hines-Allen. Mansfield was able to cut the lead to four but Cheyney was able to push the lead back up to nine (38-29) with just under 11 minutes to play. Cheyney did not a field goal the final 6:38 but converted six of eight free throws in the final minute to secure the victory.
Cheyney will face cross town rival West Chester on Wednesday at 7:30 in Hollinger Fieldhouse on the WCU campus.
