Cheyney found themselves down 10-0 and battled all the way back to take a 21-20 lead with 5:50 to play in the half but could not hang on. Slippery Rock (2-9) defeated the Lady Wolves (1-9) 77-66 in Cheyney's final contest of 2013. The Lady Wolves will not hit the hardwood until January 3rd and 4th when they host Edinboro and Mercyhurst. Tip-off for both of those games will be at 1:00 pm.
The Lady Wolves kept themselves in the game in the first half thanks in part to the three point shot. Cheyney made six three pointers in the first half. In fact the Lady Wolves didn't convert a traditional field goal until the Destiny McFarland drained a foul line jumper with 3:42 to play in the half. The Rock was able to rally the end of the half and take a 35-30 lead into the locker room.
A Kyra Hines-Allen lay-up and subsequent foul shot cut the Rock lead to three early in the second half but Cheyney was unable to get any closer. "We keep battling hard," commented rookie head coach Kyle Adams. The Rock was able to stretch the lead to a game high 13 with just under five minutes to play. However an 8-0 run by the Lady Wolves cut put the deficit at six with 1:48 to play. But the Rock answered with Rebecca Olkosky draining a three pointer on their next possession to push the lead back up to nine. Cheyney cut the lead to seven but Slippery Rock was a perfect four for four from the foul line in the final :30 seconds.
"We started out unfocused and dug ourslves a hole. I thought we showed toughness in fighting back to tie it up with about five minutes to play in the first half," continued Adams. "Down the stretch we didn't rebound and locate their shooters. We have to make better decisions in order to win basketball games."
Lachelle Miller came off the bench to spark Cheyney with 18 points. Team mates Kia Whitley-Duncan and Amber Grenwright added 13 and 10 points respectively.
Jazmyne Frost pace the Rock with 29 points and a game high 8 rebounds.
