Box Score
Cheyney (2-13:2-4) snapped a seven game skid thanks in part to Lachelle Miller's three pointer with :00.6 seconds showing on the clock to defeat Millersville (9-7:4-2) 61-60. Miller came off the bench to score 13 points. It was Millers' first game back since receiving a hip joint injury. She was forced to miss the Lady Wolves last game at Kutztown and set out the second half against Gannon. It was the first time the Lady Wolves defeated Millersville since January 27, 2010 (67-58).
Kyra Hines-Allen paced the Lady Wolves with 20 points and nine rebounds.
Despite 23 turnovers and shooting only 16-59 (27%) the Lady Wolves were on fire from the charity stripe. Cheyney made 16-17 during the first half and followed that up shooting 7-10 in the final 20 minutes.
"I'm so happy for our kids," commented rookie head coach Kyle Adams after the game. "Young people are so resilient. We struggled to find a rhythm offensively but continued to fight. We were down eight at the half and we talked about giving ourselves a chance to win at the end. Kyra set a great screen and Lachelle Knocked down a huge shot after struggling with her shot much of the day. Our kids are learning to embrace adversity. This was a great win for our program against a perennial PSAC contender.
The Lady Wolves found themselves down early 9-3 but rallied to tie the game at 10 after Hines-Allen drained a pair of free throws. The game went back and forth over the next few minutes. With the game tied at 23 the Marauders went on a 10-2 over the final four minutes of the first half to take a 33-25 lead into the locker room.
Millersville was able to extend the lead to nine, 36-27 before the Cheyney come back began. The Lady Wolves knotted the game at 40, the sixth tie of the afternoon, after Hines-Allen converted a lay-up with 10:15 remaining. However with 3:33 on the clock the Marauders once again had a seven point lead, 57-50. Cheyney would use an 8-1 run over the two minutes to tie the contest at 58. Cheyney was then able to force a turnover but could not convert on the offensive end. After a time out by Millersville, Coach Flieg draw up a play that produced a lay-up by Alexis Martin with :14 to play. The Lady Wolves took a shot with :05 but it was off the mark, however, the rebound went out of bounds in favor of Cheyney. With Cheyney out of times out, Millersville did the Lady Wolves a favor by calling time out to set their defense and in the process gave Coach Adams a chance to design a play for the Lady Wolves.
"The play at the end of the game wasn't exactly how Coach Adams drew it up but the end result was what we were looking for," commented Miller. I was supposed to shoot the three coming off a screen from Kyra (Hines-Allen) and that was essentially what happened."
Millersville Coach Mary Flieg has only lost to Cheyney three times in her 24 years on the sidelines at Millersville.
Cheyney will travel to East Stroudsburg on Wednesday.
