Box Score Cheyney (1-5) squandered a 37-30 halftime lead against Elizabeth City dropping a 68-60 decision to the Vikings in the second round of the Chick-Fil-A Classic hosted by Virginia State. The Lady Wolves got out-scored 38-23 in the second half, dropping their third game in a row.
TaKayla Ellis paced the Lady Wolves with 16 points. Amber Genwright added 11 points while Kyra Hines-Allen grabbed a team high 10 rebounds. "We came out with much more energy today," commented Coach Adams.
The Lady Wolves found the shooters touch in the first half, hitting on 13 of their 20 attempts. Cheyney jumped out to an 8-2 lead with Ellis leading the way with five of the Lady Wolves first eight points. ESCU battled back to knot the game at 21. However, Cheyney would not give up the lead in the first half. With the game tied at 27, Cheyney went on a 10-3 run to close out the half.
Cheyney quickly extended the lead to 10 after Ellis drained a three-pointer on the Lady Wolves first possession of the second half. It was Cheyney's biggest lead of the afternoon. However, the Lady Vikings would not make things easy for Cheyney. ECSU's Jasmine Boyd hit a three-pointer at the 7:42 mark of the second half to give the Vikings their first lead of the game. Over the next five minutes the teams traded the lead. A Tachell Phillips lay-up with 2:49 remaining gave Cheyney a short-lived lead 56-55. The Lady Viking answered right back with a three-pointer on the next possession. Cheyney missed a pair of three-pointers but was a perfect four for four from the charity stripe down the stretch. However, ECSU's Jadda Jefferies scored six of her teams eight points in the final :43 seconds to preserve the victory.
"We turned the ball over late and rushed some shots when we got down. We will address these issues as we prepare for our contests this week," continued Adams. "I believe in our group!"
Cheyney looks to turn its fortunes around this week at home on Wednesday night against PSAC foe Kutztown and the annual Battle of the Firsts against Lincoln on Saturday night.
